Maintenance and Servicing of the Alphorn

Jump to the german version of this page.
After each playing the Alphorn should be set up and the mouthpiece be moved away immediately. Eventually produced water (dampness from the breath) should flow off. After approx. 30 minutes the connection tubes should at the below side be wiped out and greased with Vaseline.

Never put the Alphorn in flat position, not even separated in its three parts. The tubes perhaps soon are not anymore perfectly round, what would be remarkable in a bad tone. The differences of dampness are straining the diameter.IWC Replica Watches

Never lay down the Alphorn put together. Steel connections rust together, gaskets in aluminium connections loose their suppleness. Should the connection tubes even though once rust together, there would have to be operated with creeping oil over 14 days. Never do it by force!

Never leave the Alphorn behind in the car at a place in the sun. Temperatures beyond 22 degrees are already harming. Differences of straining are spoiling the wood.

Never put the Alphorn near a heating. It should be stored upright at a temperature of approx. 20 degrees. Dampness and heat are damaging.

The best care of the Alphorn is a regular using, therewith the instrument as well as the interpret remain in full fitness!

Clefts in the tubes

Alphorns are made of wood. Wood is working with dampness and temperature. We see that in the best way walking over the wooden grate in a sauna; it is creaking and cracking in all tones. This wood has passed through too many hot-cold-cycles, so that the construction of wood has let off. Under load one can even hear the rubbing of the wood in itself. We should not let it come so far with our instrument! For this reason we want to avoid such hot-cold-cycles the most possible.

Now to the clefts, which may be different as follows: first there are the alongside clefts. They are in most cases the result of improper heaving of the Alphorn (see transport). We often see and hear from colleagues that the Alphorn should be put here and then in a basin of a fountain. "The clefts will be dense again and the Alphorn plays wonderful." Well, for a short time the wood really swells up and gets dense itself. For half an hour the Alphorn may become its youthful freshness. But at the latest after the next dry period things don't look even good. It is idle to mention that such an Alphorn soon has to go "on dock" for repair.......

Now to the second kind of clefts, cut across in the middle tube. There is a point of the Alphorns made in three parts,Replica Audemars Piguet Watches which is somewhat fussy. That point is at the small side of the middle tube, where the connection tube ends up in the rattan.

What follows is: diligent players are always working until the spittle runs into the middle tube. That spittle finds its way also through the cleft between the hand and the middle tube. After finishing with playing the middle tube is set up together with the other parts for drying. If the water is now not dried up from the end surface in the standing small connection tube of the middle tube, it will penetrate earlier of later between wood and connection tube and accumulate at the lower end of the connection tube. It is quite obvious that it can hardly dry this way, and the consequences are conceivable. The wood begins there to rot, what will cause a breach within a short space of time.

We can perceive the pre-state of this "disease" in form of a black ring of rottenness approx. 20 cm below the small end of the middle tube. The final breach is then in most cases either as a mishap in the bag or as a late discovered construction mistake put on the Alphornmaker. In whatever way: a simple rag helps to resolve all these problems....
